FAQ
Getting Started
I’m a new client. Do I need a consultation first?
Yes. All new clients start with a complimentary 15-minute consultation before regular treatment.
The consultation gives me a chance to see the hair and treatment area in person, understand what you’re hoping to accomplish, and make sure I’m a good fit for what you need. I’d much rather figure that out before you spend money on a full appointment.

What happens during the consultation?
We’ll talk briefly about your goals, hair-removal history, and anything relevant from your intake form. I’ll examine the treatment area under magnification and, when appropriate, perform approximately 5 minutes of complimentary electrolysis.
That short test treatment helps both of us get useful information. You get to experience what electrolysis feels like, and I get to see how the hair treats and how your skin initially responds.

Can I have treatment the same day as my consultation?
Yes. You can book the consultation by itself, or you can reserve up to 30 minutes of electrolysis for the same visit.
The consultation always happens first. If I determine that I’m comfortable proceeding, we can move into your treatment appointment. If I determine that I’m not the right fit for your needs or that treatment shouldn’t proceed, I’ll cancel the treatment portion and you won’t be charged for the treatment time I cancel.

Why can new clients only book up to 30 minutes of treatment?
Your first appointment gives me a chance to learn how your hair treats, how your skin responds, and how comfortable you are with the process. 30 minutes is enough time to get meaningful treatment done without asking either of us to commit to a long first session before we know how things will go.
After your first treatment, you’re welcome to book any of my regular appointment lengths.

About Electrolysis
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is a method of permanent hair removal. A very fine sterile probe is inserted into the natural opening of an individual hair follicle, and a small amount of electrical energy is used to treat the cells responsible for hair growth. The treated hair is then removed from the follicle.
Electrolysis works one follicle at a time, which is part of why it can permanently treat hairs regardless of their color.

Is electrolysis permanent?
Yes. When a follicle has been successfully treated, the growth cells responsible for that hair are permanently destroyed.
What sometimes causes confusion is that not every hair you will eventually see is visible or treatable at the same time. Hair grows in cycles, so new hairs can continue appearing from follicles that haven’t been successfully treated yet. That’s why electrolysis requires a series of appointments rather than one giant clearance.

How is electrolysis different from laser hair removal?
Laser and electrolysis work differently.
Laser can produce long-term hair reduction and relies partly on pigment in the hair. Electrolysis treats individual follicles and doesn’t rely on the hair being dark, so the method can be used across hair colors and skin tones.
A lot of people also come to electrolysis after laser to work on remaining hairs.

Does electrolysis work on every hair color and skin tone?
Electrolysis as a method can be used on all hair colors and skin tones because it doesn’t depend on color contrast between the hair and skin.
That said, not every individual case is necessarily a good fit for my current practice, which is one reason I require a consultation.

Do you work on very fine or peach-fuzz-like hair?
This is one area where I want to be very transparent.
Extremely fine or peach-fuzz-like hair can be difficult to treat, and it is not currently one of my strongest treatment areas. I’ll look at the hair under magnification during your consultation and tell you whether I think I can treat it effectively.
If I don’t think I’m the right electrologist for what you need, I’d rather tell you that before you pay me for treatment.

Treatment & Results
Does electrolysis hurt?
It can be uncomfortable, but the sensation varies quite a bit from person to person and from one treatment area to another.
People commonly describe brief heat, stinging, or a quick pinching sensation. Treatment settings can also be adjusted when appropriate based on your tolerance and skin response.
Your complimentary test treatment is a good opportunity to find out what electrolysis feels like before committing to a longer session.

Can I use numbing cream?
Possibly. If you’re considering a topical numbing product, please ask me before your appointment. I’d rather discuss what you’re planning to use and how you plan to use it than have you arrive with an unfamiliar product already applied.
How many electrolysis sessions will I need?
There isn’t an honest one-size-fits-all number.
The amount of treatment needed depends on things like how much hair is present, the treatment area, hair structure, growth cycles, previous hair-removal methods, hormonal influences, and how consistently you attend appointments.
I’ll give you a starting recommendation after your consultation, and we can adjust the plan as I actually learn how your hair responds to treatment.

How often should I come in?
During your consultation, I’ll recommend a starting appointment length and frequency based on what I see. That recommendation may change as we make progress.
You don’t have to commit to a rigid schedule months in advance.

How long should my appointments be?
Established clients can choose from fifteen-, thirty-, forty-five-, and sixty-minute treatment appointments.
I’ll recommend a starting length during your consultation based on the amount of treatable hair, the treatment area, and what we learn from your first session. After your first treatment, you’re free to choose whichever regular appointment length works for you.

How soon will I see results?
You may notice changes relatively early, but electrolysis is a process rather than an instant transformation.
Because hairs cycle in and out of active growth, meaningful permanent clearance is built over repeated treatments. How quickly that becomes visually noticeable is different for everyone.

Before your appointment
How long does my hair need to be?
Long enough for me to clearly see it and grasp it with tweezers.
You don’t need to grow it into a tiny wilderness. If you shave or trim between sessions, just give it enough time to become visible again before your appointment.

Can I shave between electrolysis appointments?
Yes.
Shaving or trimming does not remove the hair from the follicle, so it can be used between appointments. Just make sure there is enough regrowth for me to see and grasp the hair when you come in.
Can I tweeze, wax, or thread between appointments?
Please don’t.
Tweezing, waxing, and threading pull the hair out of the follicle, which means there may be nothing for me to treat when you arrive.
If you need to manage the hair between appointments, shaving or trimming is generally the better option.

How should I prepare for my appointment?
Come with enough visible hair for treatment and, when possible, arrive with the treatment area clean and free of makeup, lotions, oils, or other topical products.
Please avoid tweezing, waxing, and threading beforehand.

After treatment
What should I expect after electrolysis?
Temporary redness, tenderness, mild swelling, or sensitivity can happen after treatment. How noticeable it is and how long it lasts varies by person and treatment area.
I’ll give you written aftercare instructions after treatment so you know what’s normal and how to care for the area.

What should I avoid after treatment?
For the first twenty-four hours, treat the area gently. Avoid unnecessary touching or picking, makeup directly over the treated area, excessive sweating, tanning, and prolonged sun exposure.
I may give you additional recommendations depending on the area and how your skin responds.

What do you put on the skin after treatment?
I currently cleanse the treated area with witch hazel and apply aloe afterward, unless your skin or individual circumstances call for something different.
Will electrolysis cause scarring?
Significant scarring is not an expected response to properly performed electrolysis, but no skin procedure is completely risk-free.
Normal temporary reactions are different from severe or persistent reactions. If something after treatment concerns you, contact me rather than trying to guess whether it’s normal.

Treatment Areas & Clients
What areas can you treat?
Electrolysis can be used on most areas of the face and body, including areas such as the chin, upper lip, jawline, neck, eyebrows, underarms, arms, legs, chest, abdomen, back, bikini area, fingers, and toes.
The exact area you want treated is something we’ll discuss during your consultation.

Do you treat intimate areas?
Yes. I offer electrolysis for bikini, Brazilian, and other intimate treatment areas in a private, professional setting.
Do you treat clients of all genders?
Yes. Nix Electrolysis welcomes clients of all genders.
Do you work with transgender and nonbinary clients?
Absolutely. Transgender and nonbinary clients are welcome at Nix, whether hair removal is part of gender-affirming care or simply something you want for yourself.
You don’t need to justify why you want hair removed.
Can electrolysis be performed over tattoos?
In many cases, yes. Electrolysis treats the hair follicle rather than targeting tattoo pigment in the way light-based hair-removal methods do.
I’ll still assess the area during your consultation before treatment.

Can electrolysis help with ingrown hairs?
It can. Permanently treating the hair responsible for repeated ingrowth can help prevent that particular hair from becoming ingrown again.
If an area is actively infected, significantly inflamed, or otherwise unsuitable for treatment that day, I may postpone treatment until it is appropriate.

Health & special considerations
Can I get electrolysis if I’m pregnant?
Please let me know if you’re pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
Electrolysis can be performed during pregnancy, but professional electrology guidance recommends discussing treatment with your physician before beginning. Depending on your circumstances, treatment area, and modality, I may also modify or postpone treatment.

What if I have a pacemaker, implanted device, medical condition, skin condition, or take medication?
Please include it on your intake form and discuss it with me during your consultation.
Some health conditions, medications, skin conditions, implanted devices, or recent procedures can affect whether or how electrolysis should be performed. In some situations I may postpone treatment or ask you to speak with your healthcare provider first.
I don’t diagnose medical conditions, so when something needs medical judgment, I’ll refer that question back to the appropriate healthcare professional.

What if hormones or PCOS are contributing to my hair growth?
Electrolysis can permanently treat individual hairs whether or not hormonal factors contributed to their growth.
However, an underlying hormonal condition can continue stimulating new hair growth over time. Electrolysis treats the hair that exists, but it does not treat the underlying hormonal condition itself.
If you have concerns about the cause of new or changing hair growth, that’s something to discuss with your healthcare provider.
